Portia was fuming, ranting into the phone at Calliope for a good five minutes.
"This is just outrageous! How can they be so damn petty?"
Calliope chuckled, "Don't worry about it. They're the Jewell family, after all. Being shameless is basically their
family trademark."
"Yeah, seriously! They've got zero shame!" Portia huffed, "Callie, | mean it. Don't let their crap get to you. If they
want to talk trash, let them. We're all on your side anyway. Oh, and by the way, | already dragged them on
Twitter for you!"
"Mavis and | are recruiting everyone we know to clap back at those trolls. No way the Jewell family can take us
on and cout on top!"
Calliope rolled her eyes, half amused, "You guys don't have to go to all that trouble. It's really not a big deal. I'll
just clear everything up when they hold their precious press conference."
"That's not enough. I'm still pissed! | have to fire back!" Portia snorted, "I'm calling in every favor I've got for you,
trust me. And that Lisette? That snake? There's no way I'm letting her off easy."
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtSomething warm flickered in Calliope's chest. She smiled, "Thanks."
They chatted a bit longer before Calliope finally hung up.
She hung around the living room for a while, lost in thought, when someone started banging at the door. She
went to answer it and found Uriah on the other side, reeking of whiskey and heartbreak.
"Uriah, what are you doing here?" Calliope eyed him suspiciously, unsure why he'd shown up out of the blue.
"Where's Silas? | need to talk to him!"
"He's in the kitchen." Calliope frowned, stepping aside so Uriah could barge in.
Uriah stormed straight to the kitchen doorway, shouting at Silas, who was busy at the sink.
"She's ignoring me! She barely talks tothese days!"
"I go see her, and she just brushesoff. She says since we're just mentor and apprentice, we can only falk
about work stuff! She toldnot to bother her if it wasn't about work!" s
"Don't you think that's way too much?"
"Silas, why are you ignoringtoo?"
"What, are those dishes more important than me?!"
Calliope watched Uriah, brows drawn together. It all made sense now. Mavis had been trying to keep her distance
like Uriah wanted, but apparently, he couldn't handle his own rules.
Honestly, it was kind of pathetic.
"Uriah, why don't you just sit down for a second?"
“I don't want to sit!" He turned to glare at Calliope, storming over with a look of wounded confusion.
"Why is Mavis doing this to me? She never used to act like this! What's her deal?!"
"Uriah, you and Mavis have always just been mentor and apprentice. Isn't it normal for her to keep things
professional?"
"Weren't you the one who said you didn't want to date her? That she shouldn't have feelings for you?" Mavis is
just respecting your wishes, doing exactly what you asked She hasn't done anything wrong." s
"So what's the problem? Did you expect her to keep chasing after you forever,
even if you never gave her the tof day?"
"Uriah, that's not fair. You don't want
her, but you still want her to act like your girlfriend? You can't have
both ways man. Doesn't the seera a little selfish to you?" s
