Lisa freaked out. She never thought Rebecca would call the police over something so small. She did not expect
that Rebecca was unafraid of people finding it out.
“No,” Lisa said. Her palms were sweaty. Her heart pounded. “I heard it from someone else.”
“Who told you that?” the officer asked.
Lisa glanced at Rebecca without thinking. Rebecca stayed calm, as usual. She shot Lisa a casual line. “The officer
asked you a question. Why were you looking at me?”
“Andrea from our company,” Lisa said. Fear hit her then. Her voice dropped. She knew she was done.
Andrea only mentioned something very valuable. If the officer asked and Andrea did not back her up, Lisa would
look like she had invented a rumor. She would be finished.
In the end, Rebecca, Lisa, and Jeffrey were called to the police station to give statements. Andrea from the
hospital was called too.
Half an hour later, the four of them sat in a row at the station. Lisa sat on the far right. She scooted closer to
Andrea.
She lowered her voice and asked, “Andrea, was that very valuable thing you mentioned about Rebecca the one |
sent you in my message?”
Not only Andrea, but Jeffrey also heard that. He looked over with a cold stare and gave off an intimidating
presence.
Andrea thought she had said nothing wrong, but she looked shaken. She blinked and asked, “What message?”
“The one | sent you,” Lisa said.
Andrea checked her phone. She saw an unread message. She sounded a little apologetic. “Sorry. After | replied to
your last message, | was so tired | fell asleep.”
Lisa did not know if that was true. For now, she had to believe it. “Was that the one | mentioned?”
“No way,” Andrea whispered. “How could you even think that?”
That sentence froze Lisa. She knew it was over for her. She had not only misunderstood Rebecca but also
offended Jeffrey, too.

suspiciously.
Lisa forced a smile. Her hands and feet felt cold. “Yes,” she said.
“You really are something,” Andrea said, and then paused. She glanced at Rebecca on the left and lowered her
voice. “Rebecca is usually polite. But if someone crossed her line, she would not let it go.”

Lisa bit her lip. She felt angry at Andrea. If Andrea had warned her earlier, Lisa would never have been so stupid
as to say those things in front of Rebecca.
If she had not said things that caused the misunderstanding on purpose, she would not have provoked Rebecca.
She would have kept up appearances like before, even if she disliked her.
“Apologize to her later,” Andrea said again. “Be sincere. She wouldn't hold it against you.”
Just then, the officer started asking questions. After the first question, Lisa suddenly spoke, looking uneasy. “I'm
sorry, officer. | misunderstood what Andrea meant. | apologize to Rebecca here. I'm sorry.
The officer was silent. Rebecca said, “I do not accept it.”
Lisa clenched her fists but forced herself to calm down. “I know this has caused you a lot of harm. | am willing to
make amends.”
“If a simple ‘misunderstanding’ and an apology could make this go away, then the cost of spreading rumors
would be too low,” Rebecca said. She was soft by nature, but she didn’t give in easily. “What words made you
misunderstand it like this?”
“Andrea said you used something very valuable to get Mr. Hanson to give you the money to treat your mother,”
Lisa admitted. “I jumped to conclusions for a moment.”
“Is that true?” the officer asked Andrea.
Andrea glanced at Jeffrey and Rebecca. She answered, “Yes.”
Lisa froze. Lisa always thought Andrea said those things just to make her believe Rebecca and Jeffrey were
involved. But now, Andrea’s words meant Rebecca and Jeffrey really were together.
‘But other than her body, what else could she possibly trade with Jeffrey for money?‘ Lisa thought.
“What was it?” the officer asked.
“This...” Andrea opened her mouth but hesitated. Her eyes shifted to Jeffrey sitting next to her, full of mixed
emotions. “Jeffrey toldnot to say it in public. | have to get his approval first.”
The officer turned to Jeffrey. “Mr. Hanson.”
Before the officer could say more, Jeffrey grabbed Rebecca's right hand with his left and held it firmly. His voice
was calm but clear. “Rebecca is my wife, | upset her. She wanted to sell the ring | gave her. The buyer
was me.”
The officer stared at them in silence again. This was another round of PDA. Lisa felt as if her chest had been
smashed under an endless barrage of heavy blows.
Rebecca was actually the legendary wife Jeffrey spoiled beyond measure. Her emotions spiraled. At first, she was
shocked. Then the shock turned into fear and dread. In the end, she felt completely frozen.
‘No wonder Jeffrey showed up at the team-building event just for her. No wonder he went on stage at the
anniversary party to hold Rebecca’s hand. No wonder he called her so sweetly. So that is why,’ she thought.

“Andrea.” Lisa couldn't bring herself to hate Rebecca anymore. All her anger shifted to Andrea. “You know from
the start?”
“I know. But Mr. Hanson toldnot to tell anyone,” Andrea replied with a straight face, though inside she was
burning with jealousy.
She had never expected Jeffrey to admit it so openly. She thought, ‘Isn't he supposed to punish Rebecca? Isn't he
supposed to make her suffer so she'd cback to him? Why admit it so easily? And why did he sound so
protective?’
“Then why did you say things that mademisunderstand?” Lisa demanded. “If you haven't said things that
madejump to the wrong conclusion, | wouldnt have thought badly of Rebecca.”
Andrea tilted her head. “Are you blaming me?”
Lisa swallowed her words. Rebecca was Jeffrey’s wife. Lisa couldn't afford to offend her. Andrea was Jeffrey’s
secretary. She couldn't afford to offend her either.
Then Lisa suddenly remembered the past. Andrea purposely kept a close relationship with Jeffrey. She even
called him in suggestive ways. If not for this mess, Lisa might have ended up believing Jeffrey actually liked
Andrea.
“This was mainly Lisa's responsibility,” the officer concluded after piecing everything together. “Andrea’s words
were misleading, so she bore ssecondary responsibility.
“Luckily, this didn’t cause serious consequences. We'll give you a warning this time. If there's a next time, there
will be administrative punishment.”
Lisa felt as if all life had drained out of her. “Yes,” she answered.
Andrea hadn't expected to get dragged into this either. “Okay,” she said.
“You both need to apologize to the person involved and make compensation,” the officer added.
“I'm sorry, Rebecca.” Lisa's voice was sincere. She was panicked and terrified. “I twisted someone else's words
and misunderstood you. | regret everything I did. I'm willing to pay 600 dollars as compensation for emotional
distress.”
“Forget it. Hold on to that money and spend it on getting your head straight,” Rebecca said. As she said it, her
eyes flicked briefly toward Andrea.
“Thank you.” Lisa didn’t dare to protest.
Andrea hated this outcome. Her hands clenched tightly at her sides until her nails dug into her palms, but she
didn’t even notice.
Lisa didn’t want Rebecca’s focus to stay on her. She looked straight at Andrea and asked, “Andrea, aren't you
going to apologize to Rebecca?”
