“Huh?” Rebecca looked puzzled on the outside, but deep down, she was a bit suspicious.
“Dad calledlast night and said he made you mad,” Samuel said, tilting his head as he tried to
remember. “Is that what made you upset?”
“No,” Rebecca replied, not wanting Samuel to know that Jeffrey didn’t care about his safety. That
would be really hurtful for any kid. She wanted Samuel to grow up healthy and happy.
Samuel fixed his gaze on Jeffrey, refusing to let it go without getting an answer.
Jeffrey reached out and flicked Samuel’s forehead. “You really can’t stand to seeand your mom
getting along, can you?”
“You must’ve pulled ssneaky trick to get Mom to cback, Samuel shot back, not buying that
a simple trip could fix everything.
“If a schcould bring her back, you think she’d ever get a chance to leave?” Jeffrey replied in a
low, calm voice. “Handthe suitcase and go wash up for dinner.”
Samuel couldn’t shake the feeling that something fishy was going on, but since Rebecca had
already owned up to it, he figured this was one mystery he wasn’t going to crack on the spot.
During dinner, Rebecca was so composed. It was almost like she was on autopilot, acting as if
nothing out of the ordinary had happened. On the outside, everything looked completely peaceful.
“Mom’s going to the hospital to see Grandma later,” Rebecca said to Samuel after they finished
eating. “Do you want to stay hand read, or cwith me?”
“I'll cwith you,” Samuel said, snuggling up to her.
Rebecca didn’t say no.
Just as Rebecca was about to mention it to Jeffrey, he spoke up. “I’ve already had Victor arrange the
car. All the keys are still in their usual spots, so you can drive whenever you want.”
“Okay,” Rebecca answered, making sure not to show any attitude toward Jeffrey in front of Samuel.
“I’ve got sstuff to take care of this afternoon, so | won’t be able to go with you,” Jeffrey said,
thinking about Richard, who still needed to be dealt with. “Just givea call if you need anything”
“Okay,” Rebecca replied, her voice as flat as ever.
Half an hour later, Rebecca and Samuel headed out to the hospital.
After watching Rebecca and Samuel drive away. Jeffrey finally waved Tommy and Barry over. “Where's Richard

“He’s over at the villa in the southern suburbs,” Barry reported, half-joking. “We've been feeding him like a

king these last couple of days. He already gained four pounds.”
Jeffrey said nothing and then climbed into the car and headed over
When Jeffrey arrived. Richard was lounging in the living room, watching TV with a spread of fatry wire. fruit, and
snacks laid out in front of him. He looked like he was living a high life
“How's it been these past few days? Jeffrey asked as he stepped inside
“Not bad,” Richard replied without missing a beat. “It’s just that Fm missing-Seeing Jeffrey, hard shot up from
the couch, his eyes narrowing. “What are you doing here?”
“This is my house. Why wouldn't | be here?” Jeffrey shot back.
“No way. This place belongs to your father, Richard blurted out, his eyes flicking over to Tommy and Barry, who
were standing behind Jeffrey. “Ask them. They'll backup”
Jeffrey glanced at Tommy and Barry sideways.
Tommy and Barry greeted him immediately, “Mr. Hanson.”
Richard instinctively stepped back a few paces. He finally realized that this was a trap from the very beginning.
“You set all this up,” he accused, voice trembling
“Obviously, this whole trap was set up by Mr. Hanson,” Barry said, eyes wide with mock seriousness. “Seriously,
clueless much? We told you we worked for Mr. Marcus Hanson, and you just bought it? You're old enough to know
better.”
Richard could only stare at Barry, totally dumbfounded.
Jeffrey lowered his head to hide his smirk.
Barry kept going. “And that schyou had to get rid of Mrs. Hanson? Yeah, we've got all the receipts for that.
too.
“Jeffrey.” Richard gritted his teeth, never in a million years expecting Jeffrey to play it like this.
When Richard had shown up at the Hanson residence, Marcus had made it bluntly obvious he didn’t want
anything to do with Richard.
The message was clear-Richard hadn't gotten the job done, so he might as well get lost before he dragged
Marcus down with him. Then, to make it crystal clear, Marcus had his security kick Richard out on the spot.
Before Richard could even blow up, Tommy and Barry hauled him right into a car. He didn’t get the chance to say
a single word. They just started spitting out their lines a mile a minute.
“Mr. Jensen, we work for Mr. Marcus Hanson, Tommy said. “He snapped at you to keep Mr. Jeffrey Hanson from
getting suspicious. We're here to move you somewhere safe to lay low for a while.
To keep Mr. Jeffrey Hanson's crew from tracking you, turn off your phone for now. Don’t worry. We've got you
covered. Plenty of good food and drinks are waiting. You'll be living like a king.”

“Got any last-minute complaints?” Harry asked.
Richard barely hesitated before falling for it. “Nope, I'm good, Let’s go.”
“Works for me.” Tommy replied.

Thinking back on everything, Richard just got angrier and angrier. He never imagined this was all Jeffrey’s setup
from the start.
Jeffrey strode toward the chair with measured authority, every step radiating control.
Tommy whipped out salcohol and gave the chair a quick, thorough wipe-down. Satisfied, he posted upt
beside it.
“Looks like you didn’t really listen to what | said before, Jeffrey remarked, settling into the chair, his voice steady
but cold enough to chill the air. “If that’s how you want to play it, maybe it's tfor a little attitude
adjustment.”
“I’m your father-in-law,” Richard blurted out, trying to pull sfamily card. “You're not worried
folks will start gossiping if you treatlike this?”
Jeffrey couldn’t care less what anyone thought. He just gave Richard a cold look. “Father-in-law?
You sure about that?”
Richard froze, struggling to process it. “What are you getting at?”
“1 checked into everything between you and Amelia,” Jeffrey continued, cool as ice. “Took your DNA
and Rebecca’s for a paternity test. Guess what we found?”
Richard’s heart skipped. Almost no one knew about him and Amelia. Even Rebecca was just
suspicious earlier. He wondered how Jeffrey found out.
“What do you want from me?” Richard asked. ‘He didn’t want too many people to know the truth.
“It’s simple,” Jeffrey replied. “You’re going to the police and admit you teamed up with Marcus to
hurt Rebecca.
Richard didn’t hesitate. “No way!” he said. Turning himself in would be the end. Marcus wouldn’t
spare him. And if people found out he tried to take out his own daughter, he’d never show his face
again.
“I’m not giving you a choice,” Jeffrey said coldly. “Refuse, and my lawyers will drag you to court.
Trust me. What comes next will be way worse than a few days in holding
Richard felt a cold wave of dread wash over him. He knew just how ruthless Jeffrey’s lawyers could
be. If he actually turned himself in, he’d lose everything.
“Take your tand think it through,” Jeffrey said as he rose to his feet. “I’m in no hurry. With that,
he walked out, not sparing Richard a single glance.
On the drive back, Tommy glanced over from the front passenger seat, puzzlement clear in his
voice. “Mr. Hanson, why didn’t you just drop him off at the police station yourself?”

“He’s technically still my father-in-law, Jeffrey, always the thoughtful one, answered. “Gotta give
the guy a
little face”
Tommy and Barry exchanged a look, neither of them buying it for a second.
For Jeffrey,
line Richard to prison was no big deal. But Richard was still Rebecca’s legal father, and if Richard
actually caught an attempted murder charge, he’d be stuck with a criminal record for life.
Jeffrey knew he needed to go back and get Rebecca’s approval before making any moves. Until
then, he’d just let Richard duke it out with Marcus and see who cout on top.
After living the good life here and then getting threatened by Jeffrey, Richard was definitely going
to try running straight to Marcus for help.
Thinking that. Jeffrey told Tommy, “Let our folks at the mansion know that if Richard turns up
looking for
dad, just look the other way and let him in. No fuss.”
