After breakfast, she reminded Samuel about a couple of things before heading out to the Reed residence to tutor
Emily, Victor promptly had a car ready to take her there.
When Reberra showed up, Lucas’s eyes flickered with surprise. “Rebecca”
Rebecca gave a slight nod and headed inside.
Emily lit up the moment she saw Rebecca, dashing over and wrapping her up in a big bear hug.
You cto tutor Emily?” Lucas followed them to the dance studio, starting to say something, but then biting
back his words.
“Yep, Rebecca said casually, not catching on to the awkward vibe. “Last week, | wasn’t sure I'd make it back this
Saturday, and | mentioned it to you. If there was any change, | would've told you, but nothing cup, so it's
still the usual Saturday.”
“Yeah, | know,” Lucas nodded and then paused, looking like he wanted to say more but stopped himself.
Rebecca got puzzled.
Lucas, with one hand in his pocket, walked up to Emily. He mulled it over and then finally said. “Didn't Jeffrey
mention anything to you?”
Rebecca frowned, “Tellwhat?”
“He calledyesterday and resigned on your behalf. Lucas explained. “He said you wouldn't be coming to tutor
Emily anymore and askedto find her a new teacher.”
Rebecca furned, her anger flaring up.
Lucas went on, “Honestly, if it were up to me, I'd rather have you keep tutoring her.”
“When we made the deal, you and Stephen promised not to firebecause of Jeffrey, Rebecca shot back. every
detail clear in her mind. “Does that still stand or what?”
Lucas shrugged, not hiding anything. “If you and Jeffrey were still fighting, yeah, that'd hold. But you two made
up, didn’t you?”
The whole point was to mess with Jeffrey, but now, if Rebecca stayed, he'd definitely make a move. With Stephen
buried under a mountain of work, Lucas really didn’t want to drag Stephen into this mess.
“Understood, Rebecca replied calmly, getting what Lucas was getting at..

Lucas’s eyes stayed fixed on Rebecca, his thoughts tumbling over themselves.
Rebecca squatted down in front of Emily, her voice soft and comforting. “Make sure to listen to your new teacher
and keep working hard, okay? With your talent and dedication, | know you'll really go far.”
“Okay.” Emily nodded.
Rebecca didn’t linger. She knew the decision was set in stone and there was no use dwelling on it.
“Ms. Jensen, letwalk you out,” Emily insisted, grabbing Rebecca's hand and throwing Lucas a fierce sideways
glare. “You're not coming.”
Lucas paused, hesitating a moment at his daughter's command, and then stayed where he was.
Once they reached the door, Emily peeked back to make sure no one was eavesdropping, and then leaned in and
whispered to Rebecca, “Joanna is my mom. She can’t stand him, so please don’t help Dad pass on messages or
try to get her to meet up.
“Alright, Rebecca replied, already guessing as much.
“I'm really gonna miss you,” Emily said, squeezing her in a tight hug.
As Rebecca left the Reed residence, she grabbed her phone and called Jeffrey. He picked up after just a couple of
rings. “Did you seriously quit my job for me? What on earth were you thinking?” she demanded.
“I'm really not sure,” Andrea answered, her voice gentle as ever. “Hang on; I'll go ask Jeffrey for you.”
Not long after, Rebecca could hear water rushing on the other end. Andrea knocked at the bathroom door and
said, “Jeffrey, Rebecca's on the line asking why you quit her part-tjob. What do you wantto tell her?”
Rebecca didn’t feel much. She saw right through Andrea's tricks. Still, after Jeffrey kept claiming he had nothing
to do with Andrea, his showering at her place just didn’t add up.
“He probably can’t hearwith all that water running. I'll talk to him when he gets out,” Andrea replied.
Rebecca didn’t say anything, just about to end the call, when Andrea piped up again, “Aren't you even a little
curious why Jeffrey’s taking a shower over at my place?”
Rebecca replied flatly. “Not interested.”
“Well, we kinda had a little... accident this morning, and sof my... got on him,” Andrea said, her voice all coy
and fluttery. “And since you know how obsessed he is with being clean, he rushed right off to take a

If this had gone down right after the divorce, Rebecca would've totally freaked out. She would've been jumping
to all sorts of wild theories in her head, convinced there was something shady going on between Jeffrey and
Andrea.
Jeffrey made it clear that he and Andrea were just a benefactor and a grateful friend-nothing more. Rebecca
couldn't fully understand sof his actions, but deep down, she knew he wouldn't actually get involved with
Andrea.
Rebecca called Andrea out directly. “You're missing a few details here.”
Andrea blinked, putting on a confused front. “Huh? What are you talking about?”
Rebecca didn’t miss a beat, “What you really mean is, you spilled your fruit juice on him, right? He hates that
sticky stuff and the smell, so of course, he went to wash it off.
Andrea fell silent, her brows knitting together. She hadn't expected Rebecca to catch on so fast. She'd
deliberately splashed juice on Jeffrey. Her whole plan was to call Rebecca while he was showering and drop hints
to make Rebecca misunderstand.
Only, Rebecca beat Andrea to it and called first-totally throwing off Andrea’s game.
“Tell him to callback when he’s done, Rebecca said, without waiting for a reply. She ended the call and let
the driver take her straight to the hospital.
Before she even reached the hospital, Rebecca got a call from May. May told Rebecca that she was back and
suggested they meet up to talk.
Half an hour later, Rebecca met up with May at a restaurant just across from the hospital.
As soon as Rebecca walked in, she spotted May in a bright red dress, both glamorous and lively, waving
enthusiastically and calling out, “Over here, sweetie.”
Rebecca hurried over and gave May a warm hug.
“You've lost weight,” May said, eyeing Rebecca up and down. “If your mom wakes up and sees you this skinny,
she'll be worried sick.”
Rebecca laughed. “You're still stunning as ever.
May grinned, a playful twinkle in her eye. “Sweet talker, huh? Chere. Letplant a real kiss on you.”
Rebecca didn’t even hesitate to put up her hand to stop her, knowing May meant business when it cto
giving kisses.
Back when Amelia was still awake, May would always kiss her, too. Sometimes, Rebecca wondered if May swung
the other way, but everything she’d seen told her May was just affectionate, nothing more than that.
“You're acting just like Amelia, May grumbled, playful but blunt. “Always blocking my kisses! Keep it up, and I'll
swear off loving you two for life.”

Rebecca coughed and shot back. “With Mom's personality? She'd probably say, ‘Go ahead; that's fine by me.”
May just stared for a moment, thinking. “Totally something Amelia would say.
After the banter, Rebecca leaned in, getting serious. “May, can you tellwhat my mom was really like when
she was young?”
