The second Heriberto recognized the voice, a vein throbbed in his temple. “Nathaniel. Put Iris on.”

“Sorry, not happening. She's not taking calls tonight. Just had a bath and went to bed,” Nathaniel said, his tone

casual and suggestive.

With that, he hung up. With that, he hung up. There was no way Heriberto could take it out on him.

The dial tone buzzed in Heriberto’s ear. He almost threw the phone across the room.

Nathaniel hadn't lied.

The day had drained Iris, and the second her head hit the pillow, she drifted off.

Nathaniel stuck around for a bit, keeping an eye on her.

Just as he turned to leave, her phone rang. He picked it up without hesitation and stepped out to take the call.

After he hung up, he peeked in on her. She was fast asleep. He put her phone on silent, set it down, and made

his way back to his place on the 37th floor.

Iris slept straight through to six.

Like clockwork, her body woke her. She threw back the blanket, got up, and started toward the bathroom.

Halfway there, she stopped and laughed to herself.

She thought, “I really trained myself well. He kicksout, and I'm still thinking about making his breakfast.”

From now on, she didn’t need to cook for him or do anything for him.

Everything she did would be for herself and the twins growing inside her.

Iris lay back down, but sleep wouldn't come.

So she grabbed her phone, leaned against the headboard, and started scrolling through work files.

A dozen rich ladies had submitted new custom requests.

Her assistant sent over their full skin analysis reports and suggested formulations yesterday.

Each of her clients was highworth, so Iris reviewed each file herself.

When a client dropped six figures or more a year, mistakes weren't an option.

Iris was deep in the details when Heriberto’s call cin.

The caller ID still said “Hubby*. She stared at it for a moment before picking up.

“Iris.” His voice csharp and low, thick with irritation.

“Mr. Hale. What's up?” she asked flatly.

He breathed a sigh of relief at the sound of her voice, then snapped, “Where are my cufflinks? You hid them

away or what?”

She blinked, thinking, “So he’s still living in our house?”

Now that she was gone, he had no reason to leave.

He just didn’t want to be around her.

“Third drawer down, under your ties. If they're not there, ask Ms. Caine,” she replied.

Heriberto hung up right away.

Iris shook her head.

He just took her help for granted, like she was his maid.

She took a deep breath and turned back to her files.

Not even two minutes later, Heriberto called again.

She hesitated, then answered.

That pair had been a gift from her two years ago. Heriberto barely ever wore them.

“They're with other cufflinks. If you still can’t find them, maybe ask your dear Ms. Caine.”

With that, she hung up.

The dial tone came, and his anger flared. The vein in his temple throbbed again.

“Breakfast is ready, Mr. Hale,” said Agnese, the housekeeper, standing by the stairs.
