“Please, don't thank me,” Eugene said quickly. “Like | said, we're family now.”
Dora had been terrified about her future. With the old woman gone, she had no reason to believe the Winters family would
continue to employ her. They might even sell the house. Eugene’s words were a profound relief.
“You don’t have to givethe house, sir. Just lettingstay is enough. | don’t need a salary. I'll be here to cook a meal for you
whenever you visit,” she said, her voice thick with emotion.

After they finished eating, Sylvia helped Eugene go through sof Grandma Winters’s belongings.
In an old cedar chest, they found all of Eugene’s childhood clothes, his awards from kindergarten and elementary school, and even
a plastic medal he had won in a game. She had saved everything.
Seeing these things, Eugene finally broke down, his body shaking with sobs.
Sylvia could only sit with him in quietpanionship.
For the next two days, Sylvia stayed by Eugene's side, helping him with the arrangements. She didn’t interfere, merely offering her
quiet support.
On the third day, at the memorial service, Sylvia attended as a guest and laid a final bouquet of flowers for the old woman.
Many people cto pay their respects. Sylvia saw Eugene's grandfather there. He stood before the portrait for a long time. Sylvia
wondered if he felt any regret, but she decided he probably didn’t, because he soon left with his young wife.
Mrs. Winters pulled Eugene into a quiet corner. “Who was that woman you were just talking to?” she demanded.
