My ankle, which had been injured earlier, briefly held my attention. The wound had healed so quickly that | didn’t

even have a chance to get a proper look at it before it was completely gone.

“Boss?”

I turned to Rachel and offered her a small smile. “Get in the car. Let's head back to the hotel.”

She nodded and slid into the seat beside me. After settling in, she gently took my hand and murmured,

“Boss, | was scared. | thought | might never get you back.”

| chuckled softly. “Silly girl, it was just a forest. Did you really think it was going to swallowwhole?”

She shook her head. “No, but you were lost once before-when you were a child. It took years for your family to

find you again. If something had happened to you this time...”

| patted her hand reassuringly. “I'm fine, Rachel. Really. There's nothing to worry about.”

The driver started the car, and we made our way back to the hotel.

As we walked through the entrance, | spotted Beta Finn waiting in the lobby.

He approached with a slight smile. “Hello, Selene.”

| gave him a polite nod, though my expression was tinged with confusion. “What are you doing here, Beta Finn?”

He seemed surprised by my question. “We're staying here, sas you.”

| scoffed inwardly. That explained how Kane had gotten my room number and managed to send that bouquet to

my suite.

Rachel glanced between us, puzzled, so | introduced her to Beta Finn.

Once we excused ourselves and headed toward our rooms, she leaned in and whispered, “Boss, how do you

know Alpha Kane's Beta?”

“I met him...” | hesitated. As my personal secretary, she knew | had never spoken to him at any pack meetings.

“I've talked to him at parties,” | finally said. “He’s polite. Unlike his Alpha.” My thoughts drifted to Kane, and |

frowned slightly.

| still didn’t understand why he kept reaching out to me.

“Boss, can | ask you something?” Rachel's voice was hesitant.

“What is it?”

“W-Was the news true?” she asked cautiously, referring to the report Kane had released that morning. | could

see curiosity flickering in her eyes. She had noticed my neck last night. She had also seen Kane and me

emerging from the woods together earlier today. It was only natural that she would start making assumptions.

“That news is fake,” | said firmly. “I have nothing to do with that man.”

Rachel beamed at me.

“Why are you so happy?” | asked, narrowing my eyes.

“Boss, | was convinced you and Beta Axel were... you know.” She wiggled her brows suggestively. “So when |

suddenly saw you with Alpha Kane, | was shocked.”

| scowled. “I have nothing to do with Axel either. He's just a friend.”

Her mouth fell open in surprise. | sighed. It seemed like everyone in my pack assumed Axel and | were lovers.

Back in my hotel room, | collapsed onto the bed, too exhausted to bother changing or freshening up.

As | lifted my hand, something caught my eye-a faint black line across my skin. Kane had grazed my burn scar

with his claw, and the makeup | had used to cover it had rubbed off, revealing part of the mark beneath.

| stared at the ceiling, my mind swirling with frustration. Why couldn’t my life ever just be peaceful?

| wanted to step away from my position at the pack’s company. If | kept running into that man, he would make

my life a living hell. But | couldn’t just walk away overnight-my family counted on me. They sawas

responsible, someone who didn’t abandon her duties.

‘I'll do whatever it takes, even if it means walking through fire.”

As | closed my eyes, my wolf's voice echoed in my mind.

“You shouldn't have clawed him.”

| snapped my eyes open but didn’t respond. She continued anyway.

“You know he won't heal from that wound.”

A laugh slipped past my lips as | imagined Kane's reaction when he realized it hadn't healed.

“Next time, I'll claw his heart,” | muttered, my voice laced with anger.

“What if he was trying to-"

“Dominic,” | interrupted. “What if one day you have to choose betweenand him? Would you pick him over

me?”

“How could that even happen? We're one and the same. We can’t be separated. Just like him and his wolf-you

saw it tonight.”

| fell silent, lost in thought about my return to the pack tomorrow. At spoint, sleep claimed me.

By the t| opened my eyes, morning had arrived.

After freshening up, | dressed in a long gown to conceal my ankle. Then, | called Rachel and told her to book our

tickets back to the Iron Crown Pack.

Once | had packed up the belongings | had used over the past two days, | stepped out of my hotel room. Rachel

emerged from hers at the stime, and together, we headed to the reception desk.

As we were checking out, a young boy approachedwith a bouquet of red roses.

| didn’t need to guess who sent them. My eyes immediately landed on the small card tucked inside.

“Goodbye, Selene Hawthorne.”

| frowned and glanced around the lobby. It didn’t take long to spot Kane Thlounging casually sipping a cup

of coffee. His gaze was locked onto me, studying my every move.

Without hesitation, | looked around until | found a trash bin. | walked over and tossed the bouquet straight into it.

When | turned back, Kane's expression had darkened with fury. | smirked at him before returning to Rachel, who

was staring atin shock.

“Let's go,” | said, and we left the hotel.

We hailed a cab and headed to the airport. While waiting for our flight, a message popped up on my phone from

an unknown number,

“Instead of thankingfor last night, you insultedby throwing away my bouquet. But | promise you, we'll

meet again very soon.”
