Chapter 168

Upon entering the private room. Hailey handed the menu to Finley first.

Finley ordered a few dishes before passing the menu back to her.

(+58)

After they had finished ordering. Finley looked at the young woman in front of him and slowly took a deep breath.

“Hailey, I'm sorry.”

Hailey had grown much colder and more mature after regaining her memories. During the past two years,

although she had been distant, there were still moments when she showed a bit of her girlish innocence, even

acting a little spoiled at times, especially around him.

But now, Hailey had becsomeone who treated him like an elder to be respected, not as a father.

It saddened Finley.

“Father, this isn’t your fault,” Hailey said, her voice quiet and distant. “You don’t need to worry about the

situation here. I've already taken care of it.”

Finley looked at her, his gaze softening as he sighed. “You're nothing like Valerie. You're far more independent

than your mother ever was.”

“Really?” Hailey gave a faint, indifferent smile, not showing much emotion.

Your mother was gentle by nature, always polite and courteous, and she treated everyone with kindness. She

had an innocent naiveté about her,” Finley said, his voice gentling when he spoke about Valerie. “Back then, she

was like a delicate, radiant rose, needing care and protection.”

Hailey remained silent, not interrupting him.

Finley continued for a while, but noticing that Hailey didn’t seem interested, he let out a quiet sigh and fell silent.

He couldn’t shake the feeling that, after all this, Hailey had beceven more distant than before.

He had failed her.

Finley thought, “This time, the rift between Hailey andwill likely remain for good!

The room fell into a heavy silence.

The waiter entered, placing the dishes on the table. The two of them ate for a while, and about ten minutes later,

Raphael arrived at the private room.

Raphael’s arrival seemed to ease Finley's tension.

“Finley, long tno see,” Raphael said with a smile, walking over to lightly hug Finley.

Finley smiled back. “How have you been? Busy with work? You look like you've lost sweight.”

“It’s all right. Being a doctor means late nights are part of the deal,” Raphael replied.

Compared to Hailey, Raphael seemed more like the child Finley should have had.

Hailey sat quietly to the side, having no desire to speak.

She just wanted to finish this meal quickly, drop Finley off at the hotel, and go hfor smuch-needed

sleep.

She had too many things to do and didn’t want to waste time.

Raphael tried to keep the mood light, but Hailey made it clear she wasn’t interested in chatting, and the

atmosphere in the room grew increasingly cold.

After dinner, Raphael drove Finley to the hotel.

Finley waved goodbye to both of them as he entered the hotel.

Raphael watched the man’s slightly hunched back through the car window, unable to suppress a sigh. “Finley's

getting old.

Hailey turned her head, glanced at him, and muttered a faint “Mm.”

“Hailey, are you angry at him?” Raphael asked softly.

Hailey pressed her lips together and replied, “Rather than angry at him, I'm angry at my uncle.

Raphael sighed again, his voice gentle. “But there's nothing we can do about it, Hailey. Try to let go. Finley really

loves you. If you hold a grudge against him, that wouldn't be fair.”

Hailey pursed her lips and said, “Takeback to the Dalton family.”

Seeing her like this, Raphael didn’t say anything more. He started the car and drove toward the Dalton family.

The Dalton Group had resumed operations, though it wasn’t as strong as it once was. At least bankruptcy had

been avoided.

After the crisis, Hailey now held 35% of the Dalton Group's shares, making her the second-largest shareholder

after Kenneth. Even Isaac only held 10%.

There had been many changes among the high-level staff at the Dalton Group, though Hailey’s position had

remained largely unchanged. Given her significant stake, Kenneth had been forced to give her many privileges.

On the eve of the new school year, more trouble hit the Dalton family.

A fisherman found a bloated, decomposing female body while fishing in the back sea.

After preliminary examination by the coroner, the body was identified as Rose.

Selena and Aiden went to claim the body. Selena fainted on the spot, and Aiden’s face was filled with grief.

The news of Rose's death spread quickly, and within two days, it had reached every corner of Hallon City.

Once again, the Dalton Group found itself at the center of controversy, with the stock prices, which had just

begun to recover, starting to fall again.

The coroner found unusual marks on Rose’s body, suggesting that her death was likely a murder.

Selena reported the case, demanding the police investigate thoroughly.

The first person to be questioned was Aiden.

“The estimated tof death was about half a month ago. Can you tell us what your relationship with the

deceased was during that period?” the police asked.

Perhaps out of guilt, Aiden’s face turned pale, and his eyes wandered nervously. “My relationship with my wife

has been bad for the last two years. We argued frequently, but we never physically fought.

“Due to work, | was often away from home. We sometimes wouldn't see each other for half a month, or even a

month. That becnormal for us.”

“When was the last tyou saw her?” the police asked

Aiden thought for a moment. “It was about two months ago

Do you remember the exact date?” the police pressed.

“Probably around the middle of the month, around the 15th. I'm not entirely sure about the exact date?

“Do you remember what you talked about?”

Aiden gave a bitter laugh. “We had an argument, and | was so angry that | slammed the door and left”

The police continued, “What was the argument about?”

Aiden scratched his head. “To be honest, it’s embarrassing. | cheated on her

Before coming to the police station, Aiden had consulted with a lawyer about how to answer the police's

questions.

“Did she contact you before her death?” the police asked.

Aiden thought again. “I did get a call from her. She askedfor money, said she wanted to go on a trip to clear

her mind. | didn’t give her the money, and we had a small argument. After that, we didn’t speak again.”

The lawyer had advised him to be truthful, as the police likely already had Rose’s phone records and hadn't had

tto delete them.

The police said, “Okay, you can step aside for now.”

Next, Selena was called in for questioning.

Compared to Aiden, Selena was much more agitated.

She snapped, “You people are something else. My mother’s dead, and instead of focusing on finding her killer,

you're questioning me? Do you think | could have killed my own mother?”

“Until we have evidence, there's nothing we can say,” replied the female officer, her tone icy.

Selena scoffed. “So, what evidence do you have now?”

“We're the ones asking the questions. Sit down and behave!” The officer slammed the table, her voice rising.

Selena rolled her eyes in annoyance and slumped into the chair.

In the next room, Hailey was also being questioned.

“I've never met her,” Hailey said, her voice calm and composed. “After returning to the Dalton family, I've been

staying at home. | only saw her once, about a month ago.”
