Chapter 278 You're the Best
“Well, really.”
It was already too late to whip up anything at home.

Allen had been pacing earlier, clearly anxious, but the moment he saw the two of them planning to head out for
dinner, he let out a subtle sigh of relief.
Well, every problem's got its answer.
Turns out, Lucien had finally met his match—and she was more than capable of keeping him in check.

Lucien didn’t eat much himself. Instead, he sat beside Kaia, carefully slicing the snacks into smaller pieces just
for her.
Kaia beamed as she ate-her earlier gloom completely gone.
Even though she couldn't have spicy food, they ordered a half-and-half pizza.
She leaned over to sniff the spicy side with a wistful grin, then eagerly tucked into the non-spicy chicken half. To
her, it was perfect.

It wasn’t that Kaia was being stubborn about wanting pizza. She'd done her homework-an occasional mild
indulgence was fine during pregnancy.
Still, she was in her first trimester, and she didn’t want to take any chances, especially not if it meant risking the
baby’s health or skin. Better safe than sorry.
Sometimes, women really were easy to please.
After the meal, Lucien gently took her hand and led her on a slow walk to help with digestion.
They got haround 9:30 p.m., and by 10:30, Kaia was already in bed, completely spent after the emotional
roller coaster earlier.
Squinting toward Lucien sitting at the desk under a soft pool of lamplight, she asked drowsily, “Aren’t you going
to sleep?”
Lucien set down his notebook, leaned in, and kissed her gently on the eyes.
“Ill sleep later. You go ahead. Good night, honey.”
“Good night, honey,” she mumbled, eyes already fluttering shut.

he turned back to his desk and began writing again, the pen gliding softly over paper.
Whatever it was he was writing-he didn’t say.

The next morning, after breakfast, Lucien drove Kaia to the law firm.
“Are you having lunch with your colleagues today?” he asked.
Kaia shook her head. “Probably not.”
“Alright then—I'll bring you lunch,” Lucien said casually.
Kaia nodded and headed inside, not thinking much of it.
To her surprise, it wasn’t Chris who showed up at noon-it was Lucien himself.
She slipped into the car and immediately noticed the little fold-out table he'd set up.
It was neatly arranged with a well-balanced meal-a mix of protein and vegetables, plus a fresh side salad.

Lucien smiled. “Give it a try-see if you like it.”

She picked up her fork and took a bite of the salad. The tangy dressing instantly perked up her appetite.
“The food today tastes... really homey,” she said. “I don’t think I've ever seen anything as plain as salad on the
table at Graves Manor.”
Lucien didn’t say much-just asked softly, “Do you like it?”
Kaia nodded with a smile. “I love it.”
By the tshe'd worked her way through half the main dish, she finally paused, eyes narrowing in suspicion.
“Wait. Did you tell the kitchen what to cook?”
Lucien raised an eyebrow, amused but silent.
The truth was, the night before, he'd asked Vanessa for a list of all the dishes Kaia liked. Then he'd personally
adjusted the
menu.
For instance, grilled saury wasn’t ideal for pregnancy, so he'd swapped in a milder fish but kept the same
preparation style. He'd even told Vanessa not to say a word.

Kaia’s heart melted. She threw her arms around him and kissed him square on the cheek. “It's amazing! Honey,
you're the best.”
Lucien chuckled, gently booping her nose. “Who was it that cried yesterday saying | didn’t love her?”
Kaia grinned. “Not me. That must've been someone else.”
After ssweet talk, Kaia was just about to head back to the office when she caught sight of a familiar figure
through the café window.
George was seated across from a woman, his expression drawn and distracted. Something about the scene felt
off. Kaia hesitated at the entrance, unsure whether to go in. But before she could decide, George spotted her and
waved her over.
The woman turned her head slightly, just enough for Kaia to catch a glimpse of her profile-then abruptly stood
up and hurried away.
“George, why didn’t you tellyou were back in the country?” Kaia asked as she walked over.
George offered a faint smile and motioned for the waiter to 577

water instead?” he added. He wasn’t sure if pregnant women were supposed to drink coffee.
“I just cback to take care of a few things,” he said. “I was planning to see you later.”
Kaia raised a brow at him, clearly unconvinced. She didn’t press, but she could tell there was more going on than
he let
on.
“Have you had your first prenatal check-up yet?” George asked.
“Not yet,” Kaia replied with a small laugh. “But it's coming up.”
“How long are you staying this time?” she added.
“Not long,” George replied softly. “Could be gone anytime.”
They chatted for a little while longer before saying goodbye.
Kaia wasn’t especially close with the Vanes-since they lived abroad, their contact had always been sporadic at
best.
She didn’t feel the need to pry. Everyone had their own secrets.
Afterward, she headed back to the law firm for a quick nap.
Meanwhile, George remained seated, staring down 677 Business card in his hand. A wry smile tugged at his lips.

Right on time, George walked in.
